Kerala Flood Relief and Rebuild Efforts - Rajagopalan Nair (FR5)

"Manava Seva Madhava Seva"

Dear NSSONA Families,

As we continue our efforts please meet Shri Rajagopalan Nair and his wife from Thalavady, Upper Kuttanadu, Alapuzzha district who were severely affected during the flood. Shri Rajagopalan Nair is the sole earning member of the family. He lives in a house that is no better than a shed. The kitchen does not have proper walls, and the family frequently sees snakes in their kitchen. The toilet is in the most pitiable state, built with tattered sheets and sacks.

Making matters worse, Shri. Rajagopalan Nair had to undergo a surgery to remove a kidney tumor. He has two boys studying in 12th and 10th grades respectively. Even after the surgery he is working as a mason’s asst to support the family.

This family of four sleeps in a single room, under a roof that could collapse at anytime. The work has been progressing steadily in regards to the rebuild. To make matters worse, in the flood, their home was half submerged in water.

Kerala Flood Relief and Rebuild Efforts - Radhakrishnan Pillai (FR3)

"Manava Seva Madhava Seva"

A huge thanks to our generous community who contributed towards our fundraising event through the NSSONA GoFundMe portal as well as through individual contributions during the Chicago Convention weekend. We have been liasing with local NSS karyogams, efficient volunteer groups, taluk union teams and with local residents in the flood affected areas.

We are pleased to inform that with all of your help as part of our flood relief rebuilding, we have began work to help deserving Nair families. One such family of many is Radhakrishnan Pillai and his wife, whose house in Kuttanadu had been severely affected by the flood.

Code for our project: FR3

Radhakrishnan Pillai is a fisherman. Recently, he had to sell his boat which was the families sole livelihood - for his wife's surgery. During the flood, the structure of his house receded into earth by three feet, leaving the house in a foot of water. Imagine waking out of your bed and stepping into water for the rest of the day! That is what this couple face on a daily basis.

How do we do it:

For FR3, we are collaborating with the local NSS karayogam  along with Pulimkunnu Enginneering College students who are whole heartedly supporting in this effort. The Engineering College Principal, who has a PhD in Structural Engineering is providing free technical guidance towards rebuilding their home.
